Equipment & Clothing for JMT 2019

On the completion of each JMT hike, I've made adjustments to my equipment for the following year; taking advantage of new designs that are lighter and more functional. In my early days on the JMT, 2002 to 2006, I utilized existing alpine climbing equipment: sturdy internal frame packs, very warm sleeping bags - heavy and bulky, bomb-proof 4-Season tents, alpine clothing and a Garcia food canister. Basic weight without food, fuel or water, close to 35 lbs.

For hikes from 2007 to 2011, I'd moved to a Granite Gear Nimbus Meridian pack, a BearVault food canister, an MSR Whisperlite stove, a Black Diamond Firstlight tent and lightweight effective clothing. These changes brought the basic weight down to 22 lbs

By 2014, I'd re-equipped with an Osprey Exos Pack, Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 tent, Bearikade food cannister, titanium JetBoil stove and a Nemo inflatable mattress. Using this latest equipment on JMT hikes, I now travel with a basic weight of 19 lbs ... what a delightful change, and so very, very comfortable.

Disclaimer: I'm not promoting any specific manufacturer, brand or design for personal gain. Over many years in the mountains, I've tried, used, disliked and discarded clothing and equipment from many sources. My current inventory of gear is what worked best during the 2016 hiking trips. In 2017 I may change out some items in favor of what I consider to be more desirable and useful for the task.
