Equipment & Clothing for High Route 2022

On the completion of each JMT and High Route hike, I've made adjustments to my equipment for the following year; taking advantage of newer designs that are lighter and more functional. During my early days on the JMT, 2002 to 2006, I utilized existing alpine climbing equipment: sturdy internal frame packs, very warm sleeping bags - heavy and bulky, bomb-proof 4-Season tents, alpine clothing and a Garcia food canister. Basic weight without food, fuel or water, was near 35 lbs.

For hikes from 2007 to 2011, I'd moved to a Granite Gear Nimbus Meridian pack, a BearVault food canister, an MSR Whisperlite stove, a Black Diamond Firstlight tent and lightweight effective clothing. These changes brought the basic weight down to 22 lbs

By mid-2022, I'd re-equipped with an Osprey Levity Pack, Big Agnes Copper Spur UL1 tent, Ursack 10 L food bag, titanium JetBoil Stash stove and Thermarest inflatable mattress. Using this latest equipment on today's hikes, I now travel with a basic weight of 14 lbs ... a delightful change, and very doable for an octogenarian hiker.

Disclaimer: I've not promoted any specific manufacturer, brand or design for personal gain. Over many years in the mountains, I've tried, used, disliked and discarded clothing and equipment from many sources. My current inventory of gear has worked best during my 2022 hiking trips. In 2023, I may well change out some items in favor of what I consider to be more desirable and useful for the task.
